Social media image and video sizes for 2026

Sizes and aspect ratios for nine networks, taken only from official help and developer pages, with a source link for every table.

By the Moonya team · · 8 min read

Key takeaways
  • Instagram feed images can be anything from 4:5 portrait to 1.91:1 landscape; taller images go to Stories or Reels.
  • Full-screen formats (Stories, Reels, TikTok, Shorts) all recommend vertical 9:16.
  • Pinterest recommends 2:3 at 1000 x 1500 px; Google Business Profile recommends 720 x 720 px.
  • YouTube now recommends 3840 x 2160 px thumbnails, and Shorts run up to 3 minutes in square or vertical.
  • Keep text and logos in the center: apps cover the edges of vertical video and crop covers differently per device.

Every network crops, resizes and compresses what you upload. If your image is the wrong shape, the network decides what gets cut, and that is often your headline or your logo. Below are the sizes the networks publish themselves, with a link to each source.

Last checked against official help pages: October 29, 2026.

We only list numbers found on official platform pages. Where a network gives only a ratio, you see only the ratio; placements without an official number are left out. Specs change without notice, so check the linked page before a big campaign.

Safe zones and practical tips

  • Keep text away from the edges. In Stories, Reels and Shorts the app draws your name, buttons and the caption over the top and bottom of the screen. Put headlines and prices in the middle of the frame.
  • Design for the crop. A Reel cover is shown as a square on the Instagram grid, and YouTube banners are cropped differently on TV, desktop and phone. Keep the important part in the center.
  • One design, several shapes. A 4:5 portrait works for Instagram and Facebook feeds; a 9:16 version covers Stories, Reels, TikTok and Shorts; a 2:3 version suits Pinterest. Make the vertical version first, then adapt.
  • Use PNG for logos and text. Facebook's own help page recommends it for profile and cover images with logos or text.

How Moonya helps

Moonya creates carousels, single image posts, Stories and Reels in your brand colors and fonts. Instagram feed images are kept within Instagram's supported aspect range, and taller designs such as 9:16 go out as Stories (Stories publish to Instagram and Facebook only). Pinterest and Google Business take one image per post, so Moonya sends a single image there. YouTube accepts video only, so Moonya can turn your slides into an MP4. TikTok accepts photo carousels as well as video.

Every post waits for your approval, so you can check it first. Plans start with a 7-day trial for $1; see pricing.

FAQ

What is the best image size for an Instagram post in 2026?

Instagram's developer documentation accepts feed images with an aspect ratio between 4:5 and 1.91:1 and a width between 320 and 1440 pixels. A 4:5 portrait takes the most space in the feed. Taller images such as 9:16 belong in Stories or Reels.

Can I use one image size for every network?

Not really. Feeds favour 4:5, full-screen formats (Stories, Reels, TikTok, Shorts) use 9:16, and Pinterest recommends 2:3. Most businesses make one vertical version and one 4:5 or 2:3 version of each design.

What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?

YouTube Help recommends 3840 x 2160 pixels at 16:9 for video thumbnails, with a minimum width of 640 pixels. For Shorts thumbnails it recommends 2160 x 3840 pixels at 9:16.

What image size does Google Business Profile recommend?

Google recommends 720 x 720 pixels, with a minimum of 250 x 250 pixels, in JPG or PNG between 10 KB and 5 MB.

Why are some placements missing from this guide?

We only include numbers published on the networks' own help or developer pages. Where we could not find an official figure, such as a recommended pixel size for LinkedIn or X image posts, we left the row out instead of copying an unofficial number.
