- The first line decides if anyone reads the rest. Lead with the benefit, the problem or a surprising point.
- Ask for one thing only: one question or one keyword to comment.
- Make the comment easy: a single word, an emoji choice or a short answer.
- A keyword call to action (“Comment PRICE”) paired with comment-to-DM turns comments into conversations.
- Reply to comments, especially in the first hours. Conversations bring more conversations.
A simple caption structure
Most good captions follow the same four parts. You do not need to be a writer to use them.
- Hook. The first line, which shows before "more". It decides whether people tap to read.
- Value. Two to five short lines with the tip, the story or the details.
- Call to action. One clear thing to do: answer a question or comment a keyword.
- Extras. Location, a few relevant hashtags, practical details like hours or a link reminder.
Short paragraphs and line breaks help. A wall of text on a phone screen gets skipped.
Hooks that make people read on
The hook is not clickbait. It is the most interesting true thing about the post, said first.
Hook types that work for small businesses
- The problem: "Your color fades in three weeks? Here is why."
- The mistake: "The one thing we wish every new client knew before their first visit."
- The number: "3 things to check before you book a viewing."
- The question: "Would you try a Monday-only menu?"
- The behind the scenes: "This is what our kitchen looks like at 6 am."
- The direct offer: "Two free slots left this Saturday."
Tip: say the same thing on the image or in the first second of the video. The caption hook and the visual hook should match.
Calls to action that get comments
People comment when it is easy and when there is a reason. The easiest calls to action ask for very little.
Question CTAs
- Either-or: "Team latte or team espresso?"
- Emoji vote: "🔥 for the new look, 💧 for the classic."
- Experience: "What is the first thing you order here?"
- Fill in: "My perfect Sunday starts with ___."
Keyword CTAs
A keyword CTA asks people to comment one word to receive something: "Comment PRICE and we will send you the price list." It works best when an automation sends the promised message right away. The mechanics, rules and keyword ideas are in our guide on getting clients from Instagram comments.
- Use one keyword per post, in capital letters.
- Put it in the first lines of the caption and on the visual.
- Promise something specific: a price list, a menu, a guide, a booking link.
- Deliver exactly that in the DM.
Ask for one thing only
"Comment, like, share, save and follow" asks for five things and usually gets none. Pick the one that matters most for this post.

Common caption mistakes
- Burying the point. If the key line is at the end, most people never see it.
- No question at all. A caption that only describes gives people nothing to answer.
- Questions nobody can answer quickly. "What are your thoughts on skincare?" is too big. "Morning or evening routine?" is easy.
- A keyword with no automation. If people comment PRICE and nothing arrives, you lose trust. Set up the DM or reply by hand fast.
- Copying the same caption everywhere. LinkedIn, Facebook and Instagram read differently. Adjust tone and length.
- Too many hashtags. A few relevant ones beat a block of 30 generic tags.
What to do with the comments
Comments are the start of a conversation, not the goal.
- Reply to every comment, especially in the first hours after posting. A real answer invites more comments.
- Ask a follow-up question when it fits. "Which color did you have?" keeps the thread alive.
- Move to DMs for prices, bookings and personal questions.
- Turn good questions into posts. A question in the comments is often next week's carousel.
How Moonya helps
Moonya writes captions from your Brand Brain, so they use your real services, offers and voice, in the language you post in. You can edit any caption before approving.
- Captions per network. Captions fit each network you publish to.
- Keyword CTAs linked to DMs. When a post automation's call to action asks people to comment a keyword, it can be linked to the matching comment-to-DM automation, so the DM is sent automatically.
- Inbox. Comments and messages in one place, so you can reply fast.
- Approval first. By default nothing is published until you approve it.
DM automations by plan: Starter 1, Pro 10, Agency up to 1,000. See the pricing page or compare with Moonya vs ManyChat.

FAQ
How long should an Instagram caption be?
As long as it needs to be, but the first line must work on its own because it is all people see before tapping more. Short captions suit announcements; longer ones suit tips and stories.
What is the best call to action for comments?
One easy ask: an either-or question, an emoji vote or a keyword to comment for something useful. Ask for one thing per post.
What is a keyword CTA?
A call to action that asks people to comment one word, such as PRICE or BOOK, to get something in a DM. It works best with a comment-to-DM automation that sends the message right away.
How many hashtags should I use?
A few relevant hashtags (your niche and location) are usually enough. Long blocks of generic tags rarely help a local business.
Should I reply to every comment?
Yes, when you can. Replies keep the conversation going and show new visitors that a real person runs the account.
Can Moonya write captions in my brand voice?
Yes. Moonya writes from your Brand Brain, which it learns from your website, and you can edit any caption before you approve the post.
