The best Buffer alternatives for small businesses in 2026

Buffer is a solid, simple scheduler. If you need more analytics, a different price model or help creating the posts themselves, these six tools are worth a look.

By the Moonya team · · 7 min read

Key takeaways
  • Decide first whether you need a scheduler for posts you already make, or help creating the posts.
  • Publer and Metricool both have free plans; Later, SocialBee, Hootsuite and Moonya use trials instead.
  • Moonya creates branded posts and Reels from your website and waits for your approval before publishing.
  • Hootsuite is priced per user and fits larger teams more than solo owners.
  • Buffer is still a good choice if you make your own content and only need a few channels.

How we chose these tools

Buffer is a simple, well known scheduler, and many small businesses start there. People look for an alternative for a few common reasons: they want more analytics, a different price structure, help with creating the posts (not just scheduling them), or features like DM automation.

For this list we looked at what matters to a small business owner with limited time:

  • Who makes the content. Some tools schedule posts you already made. Others help you write and design them.
  • Networks you actually use. Check that Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn or Google Business are covered on the plan you would pay for.
  • Price at your size. Some tools charge per channel, some per user, some per brand. Do the math for your own number of accounts.
  • Free plan or trial. Useful for testing, but read the limits.
  • Extras you need. Inbox, analytics, approvals, link in bio, DM automation.

Every price and free plan below comes from each company's own pricing page, checked on October 29, 2026. Prices change, so confirm before you buy.

1. Moonya: best if you do not want to make posts yourself

What it is. Moonya is a social media autopilot for small businesses. Its Brand Brain reads several pages of your website and learns your offer, voice, audience and brand colors in a few minutes. Then it creates carousels, single image posts, Stories and Reels in your brand colors and fonts.

Best for. Salons, clinics, gyms, restaurants and local services that do not have time to write and design posts every week.

What it does well. You set rules like "a carousel every Monday at 9 am" and drafts appear on their own. Every post waits for your approval: approve, edit or skip. Nothing is published without you. It publishes to Instagram, Facebook, LinkedIn, TikTok, Threads, YouTube, Pinterest and Google Business (X is a paid add-on), and writes a fitted caption for each network. It also has comment-to-DM automations for Instagram and Facebook and a unified inbox.

Things to consider. Moonya is not a free tool. Plans start at $29/month (Starter: 3 social channels, 1,000 AI credits/month), after a 7-day trial for $1. If you already make your own posts and only need a scheduler, Buffer or Publer can be enough. See Moonya pricing and the full Moonya vs Buffer comparison.

2. Publer: best budget scheduler with many features

What it is. A scheduling tool with a free plan and per-account paid plans.

Best for. Owners who want Buffer-style scheduling plus extras like recycling and bulk scheduling.

What it does well. According to Publer's plans and pricing page, the free plan covers up to 3 social accounts (excluding X/Twitter), with up to 10 scheduled posts at a time per account. Paid plans start at $5/month (Professional) and $10/month (Business) for one account, and the price grows with the accounts you add. Business adds AI Assist, best times to post, post recycling, recurring posts and approval workflows.

Things to consider. The free plan keeps only 24 hours of published post history, and many features sit on the Business plan. You still create the posts yourself. Compare in detail on Moonya vs Publer.

3. Metricool: best for analytics

What it is. A planning and analytics tool organized by "brands".

Best for. Owners and small agencies who want to track results and competitors, not just post.

What it does well. Metricool's pricing page lists a free plan for 1 brand with up to 20 scheduled posts per month, 5 competitor profiles and 30 days of analytics. The Starter plan starts from $25/month on monthly billing and adds unlimited publishing under a fair use policy, LinkedIn connection, more competitors and reports.

Things to consider. The free plan excludes LinkedIn and Twitter/X. Metricool is strongest on data; content creation is not its main focus. See Moonya vs Metricool.

4. Later: best for visual Instagram planning

What it is. A social media planner known for its visual calendar and link in bio.

Best for. Shops, creators and brands where the look of the Instagram grid matters.

What it does well. Later's pricing page shows a visual planner and Link in Bio on every plan. Starter is $18.75/month billed yearly for 1 social set (8 profiles) and 1 user. Growth adds a social inbox and approvals.

Things to consider. There is a 14-day free trial rather than a free plan. Starter includes up to 30 posts per profile and 5 AI credits a month. See Moonya vs Later and our Later alternatives list.

5. SocialBee: best for content categories

What it is. A scheduler built around content categories and recycling evergreen posts.

Best for. Coaches and service businesses with a library of posts they want to rotate.

What it does well. SocialBee's pricing page lists Bootstrap at $29/month (5 social profiles, 10 content categories), Accelerate at $49/month and Pro at $99/month. Content recycling and unlimited AI content generation are listed on the standard plans, along with an inbox for comments, mentions and DMs on supported networks.

Things to consider. No free plan; each plan has a 14-day trial. You set up the categories and the content mix yourself. See Moonya vs SocialBee.

6. Hootsuite: best for larger teams

What it is. A long established platform for scheduling, inbox, analytics and social listening.

Best for. Growing teams that need monitoring, competitor benchmarking and reporting.

What it does well. The Standard plan on Hootsuite's plans page includes 10 social accounts, unlimited scheduling, AI post generation, one inbox and brand and competitor monitoring.

Things to consider. Plans are sold per user, and the FAQ says paid plans start at $99 for Standard. There is a 14-day trial, no free plan. For a solo owner this is a big step up from Buffer. See Moonya vs Hootsuite and our Hootsuite alternatives.

When Buffer is still the right choice

Buffer is a good fit for a lot of small businesses. Buffer's pricing page lists a free plan for up to 3 channels with 10 scheduled posts per channel, and paid plans priced per channel: Essentials at $5/month per channel and Team at $10/month per channel. It supports 12 networks, including Instagram, Facebook, TikTok, LinkedIn, YouTube, Threads, Pinterest, Google Business Profile, Bluesky and Mastodon. Every plan includes an AI Assistant, a community inbox and Start Page.

Stay with Buffer if you already make your own posts, want a clean and simple scheduler, and pay for only a few channels. Switch when the real bottleneck is making the content, or when you need something Buffer does not focus on, like DM automation.

Tip: Before you switch, list your channels, how many posts you publish per week and who makes them. Then price each tool at that exact size. The cheapest headline price is not always the cheapest for you.
